The Chapelle de l’Observance in Draguignan has launched its latest temporary exhibition: Panorama, featuring works by internationally renowned artist JonOne.

Born John Andrew Perello, JonOne began his graffiti career in the 1970s by tagging his name throughout New York City, particularly on subway trains. Now based in France since the 1990s, this American artist was awarded the prestigious French Legion of Honour for his contribution to the arts.

Presented for the first time at the Chapelle de l’Observance, JonOne’s striking abstract works are showcased in partnership with Art Consult Expert Gallery. Through this exhibition, the artist expresses his deep affection for France and its cultural heritage.

The exhibition is open to the public until September 27.

The opening event took place in the presence of Richard Strambio, Mayor of the city, President of Dracénie Provence Verdon Agglomération, and Regional Councillor for Sud Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur; Françoise Maurice, Deputy Mayor for Culture; and other local officials.

In 2024, alongside the Phase 4 expansion of Incheon International Airport’s Terminal 2 (T2), a large-scale “Art Project” was unveiled on December 3, further solidifying the terminal’s identity as an “Art Port.”

The newly revealed Art Project includes nine art pavilions each on the east and west departure corridors (spanning approximately 1,930 meters in total length and covering 8,000㎡), as well as curated exhibitions featuring renowned Korean and international artists and traditional performances. Its key feature is providing travelers with extraordinary and immersive artistic experiences that go beyond the everyday.

The project takes a dual approach by interpreting Korean cultural content in contrasting ways for the east and west wings, creating a surprising and engaging dynamic. On the west departure corridor, world-renowned urban artist JonOne presents <Korea Jazz>, a work inspired by his travels through various regions of Korea including Seoul, Incheon, Jeonju, Gyeongju, and Jeju. Infused with JonOne’s signature abstract style, the piece follows the concept of “Playing with Colors”, expressing the spontaneity and freedom associated with jazz. The front side of the art pavilion features abstract forms, while the reverse side uses figurative techniques, offering a distinct and multidimensional artistic experience.

On September 2024, the Museum of Graffiti opened Street Echoes in Shanghai’s Changning District, its first exhibition in mainland China. Among the featured artists were DocTC5, Sabe, Mugre Diamanté, Ola Kalnins, and Vance DNA.

JonOne took part with a striking live painting session, covering an entire wall of skateboards in his signature abstract and calligraphic style. The performance added vibrant movement and color to the indoor skate park installation, blending street art with youth culture.

Known for his long-standing relationship with China, including a historic mural created inside Beijing’s Forbidden City, JonOne emphasized the influence of Asian aesthetics in his work. His Shanghai contribution reflected that ongoing dialogue, making his presence a key part of the exhibition’s dynamic atmosphere.

In June 2024, artist JonOne visited Ulsan as a representative of the participating artists for the opening of the special exhibition “From Bangucheon to Urban Art” at the Ulsan Museum of Art. The exhibition, held from June 27 to October 27, brought together eight internationally renowned urban artists including JonOne, Shepard Fairey, and Vhils under the theme of reinterpreting the ancient Bangucheon Petroglyphs in a contemporary urban context.

To mark the opening, JonOne performed a live graffiti session, spontaneously painting the exterior of a Hyundai car on site. He also created new artworks during the event, showcasing his signature dynamic and abstract graffiti style, which added vibrant energy to Ulsan’s urban landscape and helped bridge the gap between art and everyday life.

Attracting over 40,000 visitors over its four-month run, the exhibition was widely praised for bringing urban art into public spaces. JonOne’s performance and mural work received particular attention for transforming the museum experience into an immersive encounter with street art. His participation played a significant role in reinforcing Ulsan’s cultural identity, inspired by the Bangudae Petroglyphs, and supported the city’s ambition to emerge as a global hub for urban art.

In 2024, the renowned American graffiti artist JonOne illuminated Haumont’s cityscape with a vibrant street-art mural, adding a splash of color to a prominent wall in the town center. Located on Rue Gambetta near the port, this project was enthusiastically celebrated by locals, transforming an ordinary façade into a dynamic canvas. JonOne worked amidst a wave of community excitement, with local media highlighting his presence “en centre-ville après une fresque rue Gambetta.”

A photograph captured JonOne standing proudly before his creation, showcasing the mural’s bold visual impact and its contribution to Haumont’s urban heritage. Known for his colorful, freestyle abstractions, JonOne’s artwork now graces the building facing the port, infusing energy and a contemporary urban essence into the town’s identity. This mural not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of Haumont but also cements its reputation as a hub for vibrant street art, thanks to JonOne’s distinctive artistic vision.

On April 3, 2024, the Jupiter Museum of Art in Shenzhen unveiled Urban Vision: A Cross‑Cultural Exploration of Urban Art, a landmark exhibition curated by Magda Danysz, a leading figure in the global street art scene.

Among the highlights was a striking contribution from JonOne, whose vivid abstractions and electrifying visual language captured the raw energy of the streets while transcending cultural and geographic boundaries. His dynamic work played a key role in shaping the exhibition’s dialogue around urban aesthetics and international exchange.

Urban Vision marked a pivotal moment for Shenzhen, positioning the city as a rising center for contemporary street art and drawing widespread attention from both local and global audiences.

Located in Paris’s Golden Triangle, at 51 rue François 1er, Eric Bompard’s new address is a cosy showcase for his famous cashmere pieces. To inaugurate the opening, Bompard invited JonOne to sign a capsule collection. Superb beige cashmeres adorned with the artist’s signature, T-shirts smeared with black paint, and soft bonnets were the result of this collaboration.

“We both wanted to work from my silhouette, which is part of my paintings, the décor and my studio, which is full of paint. I never change, I’m always covered in paint. People always ask me if they can have a shirt, jeans or trainers like mine, if I cover them with drops of paint on purpose. The creative director at Bompard heard me and wanted to do a line of cashmere clothes inspired by my paint-stained studio outfits.”

In Morocco, Jardin Rouge becomes JonOne’ studio – a time for him to delve into memories, rediscovering the rawness of urban signs while eschewing mannerism. The words left by JonOne then become a reflection of his own truths. His canvases capture fragments of life and its historical moments. The painter adds and layers strata, following a slow and continuous process of immersion and emergence from the canvas.

The artist defines a unique visual space where the feverish blend of the tamed and untamed coexist. Within this apparent disorder, we find the name and materiality of the letter, as well as the abandonment of all complexity, reducing itself to the essence of his art. Vibrancy and emotion become the true purpose of his painting. You can sense the painter’s fullness in expressing the pure energy of color and the life charge held within each entanglement of the name. In his quest for the absolute, there remains the trace of the painter and his narrative.

Montresso Foundation

This Journal is made up of 64 pages of prints taken from JonOne’s sketchbooks. It was published in 500 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist. The book features an elegant, artisanal design and is made by hand.

Exploring the repetition of line, never quite the same nor totally different, the book illustrates deep process of graphic exploration which at times threatens to veer into monomania. These obsessions are so inherent to artists, to their unique quest…

In 2020, la Faïencerie de Gien invited three internationally renowned artists from different continents – French artist Inès Longevial, American artist JonOne and Chinese artist Peng Yong – to work on two extraordinary pieces, a vase over a meter high and a large plate. This surprising line-up marked the tricentennial of the faience factory.

“The vase inspired me to have a volcanic effect through its shape… I made this vase on a full moon night; my mind was volcanic itself… I wanted to find an atypical aesthetic that differed from usual vases (…). I had the chance to work twice with the oldest ceramic factory in Lisbon, Portugal. There I understood the contact with this material. So, I saw this vase as a work of art or a canvas… The medium didn’t scare me.”

Daum further asserts its place in urban art through this collaboration with JonOne. The legendary French crystal works gave carte blanche to the artist and provided him with a new vessel for his creativity. Following the forms of his tags, he created crystal artworks in his classic color-bomb style. The crystal works and JonOne decide to combine their art and passion for color to create some exceptional pieces in intense and striking tones that play with relief and reflection: Crystal Rock I and II, Seeing Through the Night and Table for Two, a centerpiece of the collection. This coffee table made as a limited-edition series of eight pieces is individually personalized with graffiti by the artist. This collaboration allows for an unexpected dialogue between the world of street art and that of Maison Daum.

To see and understand JonOne, his countless lives and twists and turns, some of his most intense works from his latest series have been selected for this book. The reader is immersed in full-page, experimental creations and raw acts of self-expression. JonOne is currently the most influential abstract expressionist painter working today, coming from the world of graffiti where color plays an essential role. The book also includes an interview with the artist about his career.

From 2011 to 2014, JonOne divided his time between his Paris studio at Mairie des Lilas and Marseille. With the support of famous gallery owner David Pluskwa, JonOne brought together little chapters from his life, stories, and mood boards to create the artbook Chronicles. A limited-edition copy was also released, released as a series of 200 signed editions that came with a resin sculpture, JonOne’s signature, and a numbered print.

JonOne’s work focuses on movement, color and freedom of line, revealing his imagination and optimistic vision of our society.
This was not lost on agnès b., who exhibited his work at Galerie du Jour in 1989. Their friendship gave rise to numerous collaborations: performances and murals, garments featuring Jonone’s designs, a t-shirt auctioned off to raise money for the Abbé Pierre Foundation, and Kleman/agnès b. boots customized by JonOne. The agnès b. SS18 collection features the work of JonOne alongside that of the artists Adrien Beau, Bertrand Loubé, Lek & Sowat, Elzo Durt and Icon.

The Hennessy Very Special Limited Edition by JonOne, which features a colorful, vibrant design, is the latest addition to an ongoing series of collaborations between Hennessy and internationally renowned urban artists such as Scott Campbell, Ryan McGinness, Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos and Futura. The Maison instantly sensed a kindred spirit in JonOne. Constantly on the move between his home base in Paris, his native Harlem and cutting-edge art scenes all over the world, the artist has always remained true to himself, pushing boundaries and defying labels.

In the spirit of effervescence, creativity and impertinence, Perrier has chosen three of the most influential street artists in the world to create limited edition bottles: JonOne, Paris’ favorite adopted American, the poetic Sasu from Japan and the humanist Brazilian artist, Kobra. All three came up with 9 unique designs available on the iconic glass bottle, PET bottle and the Perrier Slim Can.

In 1853, specially commissioned for the marriage of Eugénie de Montijo and Napoleon III, Pierre-François-Pascal created the Eau de Cologne Impériale and its Bee Bottle. Empress Eugénie fell under its spell and the other European courts were quick to follow suit. Thanks to this creation, Maison Guerlain even gained the title of official supplier to the Imperial Court. And so, the Guerlain perfume bottle with its 69-bee design entered the history books.

The legendary Bee Bottle lends itself easily to all kinds of customization. For its 160th anniversary in 2013, nine legends of the art world rendered homage to its iconic design. Each one-liter decorative bottle presented itself as a blank canvas, forming an immaculate urban installation, waiting to be brought to life by JonOne’s explosion of color. Drawing on all the richness of his artistic practice and personal history, JonOne invented his own language of color to evoke the perfumes Shalimar (blue), La Petite Robe Noire (pink), and Rose Barbare (orange).

As if by osmosis, contents and recipient become one and the intangible takes form. Made in the artist’s studio in Paris, each bottle is unique, a true marvel of abstraction and energy individually created and signed by JonOne.

Always keeping its finger on the pulse when it comes to modern life and contemporary art, Air France has chosen to collaborate once again with JonOne, known for his unique style fusing street art with painting. Having already created the piece Air France Forever to celebrate the company’s 80-year anniversary, JonOne was invited to put his own twist on the iconic airline’s signature “accent”. The reworked logo was then proudly displayed on a Boeing 777 from Air France’s long-haul fleet. Meanwhile, on board, passengers were able to enjoy the effortless French style and total comfort of the company’s state-of-the-art cabins.

The aircraft, decked out in its shiny new uniform, was inaugurated with a trip to New York, a city that is not only the artist’s hometown but also one of Air France’s oldest destinations. It hardly comes as a surprise that this “accent”, designed to travel around the world, symbolizes a value cherished by France and by JonOne: freedom.

Broadcast on October 28, 2015 as part of the Lacoste L!VE campaign, with original sound design by Birdy Nam Nam, the video is based on the principle of “repetition”, embodying the bold values of Lacoste and JonOne. Self-confidence and faith in one’s abilities and projects are the characteristics shared by artists who know how to make a name for themselves and fashion brands that stand the test of time. The identity and savoir-faire of Lacoste are represented by iconic pique cotton and the signature shades of its red and green logo.

The mood reflects the very intense side of JonOne and the force he transmits though his dynamic, almost brutal, creative process. A predominance of black and white, a lot of grain and an aesthetic resembling old analog film are used to emphasize the weight of JonOne and Lacoste’s respective 30 and 80-year histories…

The video explores JonOne’s visceral need to create and the determinedness with which he paints, he who wishes to leave a mark on the artistic landscape, to make sure his name remains forever engraved upon our current era. This obsession seems to haunt his nights; the video is like stepping into the artist’s dreams.

Following his exhibition in late 2020 at Galerie Veyssière, JonOne returned to Touraine upon special invitation by the Departmental Council. From Thursday 12 May to Sunday 28 August 2022, the painter took up residency at Hôtel Goüin to complete a major installation entitled The Big Takeover, an ambitious endeavor and an exuberant display, intended to appeal to a wide audience. The event featured installations and a canvas of imposing dimensions. Its colorful momentum and improvisation of expressionist and abstract forms contrast with the historical prestige of Hôtel Goüin, a splendid 15th century residence, resulting in a unique solo show.

La Piscine invites JonOne to present his forays into the world of applied arts, in the wake of his recent and remarkable collaboration with the Faïencerie de Gien and Daum crystal works. A series of drawings and paintings as well as his collaboration with agnès b. are put on display, revealing a bold and flamboyant body of work which gives pride of place to movement and color.

“We all owe something to Africa. This is why “Heritage” came naturally. It is my connection with Africa and my Caribbean roots too. There is a long history of slavery there. I am here in Senegal, not far from the island of Gorée. This makes sense to me. We are all Africans.”

Organized by the two founders of the Ivorian gallery Art Time, this exhibition marked the second anniversary of the Senegalese Museum of Black Civilizations. JonOne created new works for the occasion, including several colorful canvases and ten surfboards redesigned and customized in Dakar. A traditional canoe tagged by the artist is also exhibited as one of the event’s key artworks.

“The world of board… I think today we have to slide more. I just bought a boat. Before I painted subways in New York. When I saw that they painted boats like that, I dreamed of making a boat.”

Commissioned by the City of Lille, JonOne presents the city’s inhabitants with a new artwork at Gare de Flandres. With this piece, the artist hopes to offer travelers and locals a breath of fresh air, a message of happiness and hope.

This abstract work uses the medium of Portuguese azulejos, and the material comes alive under the stroke of his brush. For this permanent public installation, JonOne uses a unique painting and pigmentation technique on the ceramic tiles to achieve as vibrant an effect as possible. Street art is brought back to its rightful home in a form that combines both painting and traditional craftsmanship, creating a unique dialogue between contemporary art and the heritage of tomorrow.

In Paris, 2020, international travel and lifestyle brand TUMI partnered up with eleven world-renowned street artists to support a noble cause. The artists, led by JonOne, transformed the brand’s iconic 19 Degree Aluminum design into unique works of art. In total, they created 26 collectors’ items to be part of a charity contest to raise money for Waves for Water. This exclusive 19 Degree collection was inspired by the theme of “freedom” – the freedom to express yourself, to keep moving no matter the circumstances, to dream in color and make your dreams a reality; the freedom to travel less physically but mentally from home, to discover new local destinations and help protect local communities. Kind-heartedness knows no borders, no bounds.

To participate in the contest and be in with a chance of winning one of the 19 Degree customized cases, art lovers and loyal customers were invited to purchase a water filter to support the upcoming Waves for Water project in Southeast Asia. After the winners were announced, the collection was exposed in the TUMI Digital Art Gallery on TUMI.com, showing all the masterpieces in detail with more details about the artists’ stories.

“Freedom is everything. My work is all about freedom, it is abstract, it is freestyle, you paint what you want to paint. La liberté of expression. We are supporting W4W to give people the essential freedom of having access to clean water (…). Symbolically all comes together, the shape of the 19 Degree suitcase and the water, a Caribbean artist coming from the Dominican Republic where people have water issues.”

“Going to the Forbidden City has been a big dream of mine since I was very young. It’s incredible!”

For the 55th anniversary of the establishment of Sino-French diplomatic relations, a major project was organized to honor the cultural exchanges of artists from both countries. Held in Beijing, the theme of the event was “The Doves of Peace on the Great Wall”. JonOne was invited to come and paint at the Palace Museum, the imperial palace of China’s Ming and Qing dynasties. It was the first ever performance by a foreign artist in the Forbidden City.

During his residency, the artist created three unique works, incorporating a strong Chinese influence into his signature style. These works are now part of the Gao’s Fine Art private collection.

In Rabat in 2018, the National Museum Foundation hosted an exhibition by JonOne entitled Illuminating the Future at the prestigious Mohammed VI Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art. With the support of the Montresso Foundation and upon special invitation from the Moroccan Ministry of Culture, JonOne created a monumental work at the top of the tower crowning the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco.

This artwork, spanning an impressive 300 square meters, is the largest ever painted by the artist and was unveiled on the 13th of November. Inspired by his time spent in the Kingdom, JonOne was captivated by the work of contemporary artists like Mahjoub Ben Bella, resulting in a work that beautifully combines street art and Arabic calligraphy. This meeting of Western artistic practice and ancient calligraphy gives birth to a unique and awe-inspiring work of art.

As part of MP2018 (Marseille, European Capital of Culture), a three-day live painting was organized at the Palais de la Bourse, resulting in a 5 x 15m fresco. The exhibition, put together by JonOne and Marseille gallery owner David Pluskwa, was entitled ‘Abstracted Love’, marking the artist’s return to the city of Marseille.
Eighteen new works were created especially for the event, including this large-scale mural. In contrast with the venue’s Second Empire interiors, JonOne displayed some of his new paintings, inspired by the post-graffiti art of today and more importantly, by love itself.

A major patron of contemporary art in Morocco, the Montresso Foundation invited JonOne to create a highly expressive series of works. The artist found a wealth of inspiration in Morocco, pushing the possibilities of media to their limit. The paint often flees the canvas to scarper onto the floors and climb the walls of his atelier in Jardin Rouge. The relationships forged by the flow of the paint on the canvas highlight a certain automatism in the artist’s use of line, serving to break down the boundaries that separate art and life. The viewer can then simply enjoy the act of contemplation instead of merely focusing on what is immediately visible.
The works were displayed in a rich exhibition entitled “Un rêve plus long que la nuit” (“A Dream Longer than the Night”), in homage to a film by Niki de Saint-Phalle.

“It is not what is written that is important in my work: the writing, the letters, it is a pretext to be able to move on to another stage, the light, the color, the energy, the movement of the body. Behind my name we find my past, my present and my future.”

JonOne has matured in his practice without forgetting his origins: he defines himself as an abstract painter who uses the graphic language of the street. But when asked about his links with Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, he today prefers to align himself with the likes of Raymond Hains, Jacques Villéglé, Christopher Wool or Ben.

This exhibition at the Clément Foundation marked the artist’s return to the Caribbean, the homeland of his parents. It allowed for a retrospective look at his career, from the first paintings of his Hôpital Éphemère era to his latest sculptural and oil works; here, we see the culmination of an artistic journey bursting with movement.

Inaugurated in April 2017, the Montresso Foundation art space hosted the exhibition XXL#1 in partnership with the David Pluskwa Gallery. Through a series of large-format canvases, a sculpture and two installations, Cédrix Crespel, Fenx, Tilt and Jonone confront the concept of monumentality and present works mostly originating from Jardin Rouge, the Montresso Foundation’s artists’ residency launched some ten years ago just outside of Marrakech.

“I knew Montpellier and Carré Saint-Anne. I loved the volume and energy of this place. I didn’t hesitate for a second.”

The City of Montpellier, a bustling hub of street art, displayed JonOne’s work for the first time in a public exhibition space. The exhibition, named “Above and Below”, unveiled pieces specially designed to resonate with the monumentality of the deconsecrated church, which has housed a contemporary art space since the 1990s.

Large-scale works with colorful calligraphy were hung on the walls of Carré Saint-Anne, marking its first ever exhibition entirely devoted to street art.

Spurred on by his love of street art and seduced by JonOne’s customization of Eric Cantona’s Rolls Royce, Bernard Magrez initially invited the artist to repaint a Jaguar from his personal collection. From this commission was born a shared desire to host an exhibition in the magnificent Château Labottière.

The event honored the end of winter, the arrival of brighter days and with it, the return of color in all its splendor. JonOne therefore chose to create 35 artworks for “The King of Harlem”, all expressing his signature style, rich in color with its explosion of calligraphy.

This project also established a dialogue with the work of Maï Lucas. This exceptional photographer has been making art for two decades inspired by the culture of New York’s ghettos, the birthplace of JonOne’s artistic career.

The “King of Harlem” project was the artist’s first exhibition in an art center, offering an opportunity to display his work in a neoclassical setting that struck a perfect contrast with his vitality, originality and origins.

In January 2015, in the Salon des Mariannes room of Palais-Bourbon, the President of the National Assembly inaugurated JonOne’s work Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité (“Liberty, Equality, Fraternity”). A tribute to the founding values of the French Republic and to democracy, the painting offers a reinterpretation of Eugène Delacroix’s Liberty Leading the People in a street art style, on a large 2 x 3m canvas.

Its inauguration was preceded by a short making-of that captures the artist painting the French motto in blue across the entire surface of the blank canvas before adding some red accents. He then enriches this patriotic palette with some complementary tones. The final stage of the process was revealed during the painting’s inauguration: Delacroix’s allegory is brought to life through the clever use of a reverse stencil effect.

In 2014, JonOne painted a mural for the historic Bichat public hospital in Paris. The fresco was installed at the entrance to the hospital, where it can be viewed by patients, staff and visitors. The integration of art into this public space reinforces the hospital’s aesthetic value. It creates a dynamic in which everyday and artistic spaces become one. This piece is a reminder of the transformative power of art, especially in the context of a hospital.
